The People of the southern Appalachians lived a simple life in log cabins, now gone. They worked hard, lived with pride, but always had time for family and friends. Their stories are captured here.
Eilleen Gardner Galer used to travel with her father as he fit eyeglasses for the people throughtout these mountains. Eilleen meticulously recorded dialect, wrote their stories and photographed them while making many friends.
Come with Eilleen and meet Aunt Titia Trail, a grand old lady who lived alone most of her life, Uncle Watt, who nearly died of fright when using the telephone for the first time, Belle Harwood, who learned the fiddle entirely on her own, and Zeke, who was delayed by a landslide getting to his sweetie. Enjoy the photographs of the people and their land, all taken in the 20's and 30's.
Modernity has changed these people and their land forever. Relive a bygone era within these pages.
