Cost?

This is a tough one! There are so many variables. The cost varies greatly according to the type of book and the quantity published. Generally, it is not cost effective to publish less than 1,000 books using conventional sheet-fed presses. Once the design is done and the presses are running, it doesn't matter whether 250 or 1,000 are printed. The printing costs are about the same. If you want to publish less than 250 books, you should design and layout the book yourself and use computer-based Print-On-Demand technology, not involving us..
A softcover book costs less than a hardcover book. A one or two color cover saves a little money. Generally, four-color printing is more expensive, but is more sellable. Sometimes, two-color work can look quite interesting with the use of screens of varying densities.
Perfect binding (glued pages with softcover) costs less than case binding (sewn and glued pages with hardcover).

At the other end of the spectrum, Five Corners prides itself in being able to produce full color books for far less than most. A 112 page, full color, 9X12 hardcover book may be produced for only $12,900 in quantities of 1,000. Again, additional copies cost far less per book.

Remember that this is an investment in yourself. As an investment, it may be a valid tax write-off. Of course, you hope to make a profit from the sales. You may be able to include many of your production and marketing expenses when calculating your profits. A hoped-for scenario would be to write off your expenses, get enough sales to break-even or produce a small profit, and then publish profitable additional printings or new editions.
