Hero - A self published book prepared by Five Corners Press

Through the increasingly publicized awareness of World War II, our Community Problem Solving team has chosen to recognize and honor our hometown veterans. A culmination of two years of research and study, we became aware of what these men and women have done to serve our country, and to preserve the freedom that we take for granted every day.
The project last year included a graduation ceremony in which diplomas were awarded to World War II veterans who were unable to complete their high school education due to their service in the war. We were also able to fund a monument that was placed in our downtown park to recognize and honor these veterans. Our project gained much community support and made us realize that we wanted to do more to see to it that these men and women would receive the recognition that they so rightfully deserve.
As this school year began, 2000-2001, our Community Problem Solving team chose to continue our honoring of veterans. This year however, we decided that the most important aspect of recognizing veterans was to preserve their legacies for posterity’s benefit. We chose to participate in an oral history project in which we actually interviewed veterans. The oral histories are to be archived at the University of Southern Mississippi. It was during the interviews that we decided we would like to put these memories and biographies into a book.
Thus HERO was born. An acronym for Honoring Every VeteRan Of war, we have compiled approximately one hundred and thirteen biographies from our local veterans. We realize this does not in any way cover all Water Valley veterans, but it has been compiled to the best of our ability. It is our hope that this small contribution to Water Valley’s hometown heroes will enable their memories to be preserved for generations to come.
