Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day reminds us that the sun is always shining – even when we can’t see it. As the story unfolds, Kara is introduced by her mother to inspirational figures such as Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez, Anne Frank, Mahatma Gandhi, and Kim Phuc — people who overcame very difficult circumstances. Ultimately, Kara learns that with faith, hope, and courage, we can become our own heroes during trying times. She also discovers that reaching out to others, even when we’re going through a challenge, helps us heal. The original edition of this book was conceived to bring hope and healing to youngsters after 9/11. It has aided emotionally thousands of children and adults across the United States and other countries. This edition grew out of the desire to support children and families uprooted by Hurricane Katrina. New York Psychologist Paula Madrid and her colleagues at the Children’s Health Fund (part of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness) have provided counseling for thousands of people traumatized by 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Madrid says this book is “a voyage to resiliency” and can help children begin to cope with the many stresses they are under. We believe that to be true. Kara Finds Sunshine on a Rainy Day has been the source of many miracles — big and small — for so many who have read the story. We hope a miracle of whatever size you need is in the works for you.
