I have been carrying a 7" x 9" drawing book with me everywhere for the past twenty odd years. There must be close to thirty of these books now, with pages tattered and faded from seeing too many foreign places and from being fingered impatiently while waiting for the spark of a caught reflection, an idea. I have thousands of pages of sights, memories, ideas, joys and complaints – all that one might experience during any day, but let pass without listening too closely.
Looking over the drawings for this collection I realize that I have treated style and the qualities of ink and graphite as pliable coauthors, using those wonderful black marks to nurse expression. My drawing style has evolved greatly over the years. While not a studied uniform approach, the trip has shown me so much about discovery and letting go of control and creativity.
What is beyond the actual image on the page? Where has the idea come from? This is what I have been investigating since I began drawing so long ago – using simple graphite and ink to plumb the mysteries of seeing and feeling who we are.
I have chosen to ignore chronology in putting this book together and very little plotting went into the lineup. Most of the drawings are reproduced near life size. Some were enlarged slightly, a few reduced. Quite a few of these drawings have become oil paintings or prints in some form. They have been reproduced as close to the original condition as possible. I did not try to clean them but let the image carry all the imperfections, smudges and mistakes that will happen in any private diary.
These drawings were not done with a finished work in mind. They help satisfy a lifelong curiosity and need to translate what I see.
