Seven Times Down

Seven Times Down, Eight Times Up
The Mary Tsukamoto Story
by Rosemary Fajen

Seven Time Down, Eight Times Up - A self published book prepared by Five Corners Press

In a world filled with racial prejudices and stereotyping, some individuals manage to emerge as shining examples of how to live one’s life. Mary Tsukamoto is just such a person. A Japanese American growing up in the strawberry fields of Florin, California, Mary Tsukamoto experienced the racial turbulence of the Japanese internment camps and all the hardships and prejudices life dealt to those involved. However, her story does not end there and that is what makes Mary’s story so inspirational. Besides going on to become a noted teacher, speaker, Asian Pacific American award winner, and a “Notable Californian,” she crusaded tirelessly for the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1987, in effect, America’s apology to the Japanese for the injustices of World War II. She is featured in an exhibit at the Smithsonian honoring all of those whose stories and lives were changed forever. One could not help but know the quiet, soft-spoken woman who could hold the rapt attention of any audience of any age without being moved by her. She is a model of American citizenship.
