Jane Sherman danced with Ruth St. Denis-Ted Shawn Company on Far East and U.S. tours 1925-1928. She was a member of the original Humphrey-Weidman Company, then appeared in Broadway musicals and as a member of the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, 1928-1936. After several years living and studying in Europe, she embarked on a writing career with the publication of five non-fiction juveniles. Then she returned to dance as writer and as the re-creator of St. Denis, Shawn and Humphrey works for the Denishawn Repertory Dancers, which she co-founded, the Martha Graham Company, the Vanaver Caravan, and others for performances in New York City, the Kennedy Center, Jacob’s Pillow, the 1990 Biennale de la Danse Américaine, Lyons, France, and elsewhere around the world.

With the documentary video Denishawn Dances On! (Kultur Productions: 2003) she and collaborators, Michelle Mathesius and Livia Vanaver, presented the largest visually-recorded Denishawn repertory in existence. Jane now resides at the Actors’ Fund Assisted-Living Residence in Englewood N.J., where, at 96 years, she continues an active creative life.
